System Two is the world's only commercially available quantum system with the ability to combine multiple quantum processors via quantum connectors — a capability that will allow it to tackle valuable business and research problems at a scale that has so far been inaccessible to quantum computation. System Two will bring useful quantum computing to the world.
System Two rethinks quantum computers as modular units. Its core unit is ba-sed around a hexagonal dilution refrigerator, each nine-ton unit contains three world-leading IBM Quantum processors in a vacuum colder than deep space designed to combat outside interference. The remaining modules are a combination of integrated room temperature control electronics and gas handling units designed to expand the computing capacity of our ever-growing quantum chip sets.
For these units, System Two introduces efficient scaling. Multiple IBM Quantum System Twos will be connected together with long-range li-nks, allowing processors inside each dilution refrigerator and between fridges to function as a single processor. This capability will enable larger quantum computers, with only floorspace as a constraint.
Quantum-centric supercomputing weaves together classical computing, artificial intelligence, and quantum computation into a cloud-ba-sed system that can use each variety of processor as needed. Not only does System Two’s modularity and customisability allow for any number of configurations of cryostat, but it also allows users to swap in classical and AI hardware to increase computational capacity. It applies lessons learnt from hybrid cloud computing to efficiently run applications that require both quantum and classical processing simultaneously.
Given its immense potential, System Two is designed to look iconic. It is clad in anodised, polished aluminium and surrounded by a box of 70/30 glass that act as both a mirror and a window into the system. A fully-realised, full-scale quantum computer could combat climate change, feed a growing population, cure emerging diseases, and much more. By resolving the scaling problem, IBM Quantum System Two can change the world.
